iPod Accessibility Update (6/25/09)

As you may know Overdrive recently released a new version of their Media Console which makes most WMA files accessible to Windows iPod users. It appears that almost all the WMA files in our collection, with the exception of those published by Simon & Schuster, are now accessible to Windows iPod users who will now have more than 4500 titles to choose from. Mac users will still be limited to the MP3 titles (461 as of today). We will continue to choose MP3 as the preferred format, but at least a portion of iPod users will now have access to almost our full catalog. When you click on "full list" under "iPod Compatible  Audiobooks" only 1000 titles are displayed, as this is the maximum that can be displayed at one time by the database according to Overdrive. The press release from Overdrive on the new release is available at http://overdrive.com/aboutus/getArticle.aspx?newsArticleID=20090527. As usual let me know if you have any problems or questions (tina.doody@plfdpl.info). THANKS!!!

NOVEMBER 2009 ORDERS

The orders for November 2009 have been submitted. As usual please send all title suggestions, questions, or comments to tina.doody@plfdpl.info. A big thank you to this month's selector Nancy Janow from South Orange. THANKS!!!

PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED ORDERS

Six months worth of lists will be kept on the wiki. If you would like to look at older lists please contact Tina at tina.doody@plfdpl.info and she will send you the appropriate file. The Maximum Access Titles for 2009 were kept the same as 2008 so no list was generated. If you would like a list of these titles please contact Tina.

Holds Manager Update (3/31/09)

Starting on April 1, 2009 we will be using Overdrive's Holds Manager utility to help manage holds on our items. If a title reaches a 9:1 holds ratio or above a new copy of the title will be purchased automatically. No more than 6 copies of an individual title will be purchased and no more than $1200 will be spent by the Holds Manager each month. The CDC  staff will continue to review holds as part of the 2 monthly orders and will revise the Holds Manager as needed. If there are any questions/comments/problems please let me know at tina.doody@plfdpl.info. THANKS!

ListenNJ Collection Development Issues/Updates from
September User Group Meeting

-         Split for budget is 25/75 for start of year purchase/monthly purchase. Libraries can spend UP TO 25% of their collection development monies on titles of their choice. Any remaining monies from the 25% not spent on the start of year purchase will be added into the overall collection development budget. Libraries who WILL NOT be placing an order should let Tina know (tina.doody@plfdpl.info) by December 12th. Cheryl will send libraries their amounts so they know how much they have to spend.

-      Individual orders should be completed by December 12th. Please send an email to Tina when your order is finished. Please name your carts as follows… “Library Name” Dec Order “Staff Person Name”, so for my Library’s order the cart name would be Montclair Public Library Dec Order Tina.

-      The CDC will review the group order and will submit to Overdrive by January 15th.

-      We will maintain a 6:1 ratio of holds on titles as much as possible, no more than 7:1. A maximum of 6 copies of an individual title will be purchased. If necessary this will be reviewed on a case by case basis by the CDC.

-      We still have open positions on the CDC. If anyone is interested please contact Tina.

Cheryl will check with Overdrive on the following issues:

-        If possible we would like to change the hold period to 3 days instead of 5 days.

-      If possible we would like to change the maximum number of waiting list titles from 5 to 7.

-      I have a note that says to ask Overdrive for statistics, but I can’t for the life of me remember what type of statistics we were interested in. Sorry.

Notes from Tina (updated January 20, 2009)

The MP3 format is now available and should work with iPods and a large variety of previously unsupported devices.

Pillars of the Earth UPDATE: Unfortunately this title is no longer available from Overdrive. In response to the large number of holds placed on our single copy the following message has been added to the item's record. This title is no longer available for the library to add additional copies to its digital collection. In an effort to alleviate the waiting list for the title, the lending period has been reduced to 5 days. As an alternative to joining the waiting list, this title may be available for check out as a CD or cassette at your library.

We will be doing a mid-month order for holds that will come out of the total monthly budget.  The primary order will be submitted at the end of the month and a list of titles purchased will be posted to the yahoo group.

We will be keeping holds to no more than a 6 holds per copy ratio with a maximum of 6 copies per title.

We focus on primarily unabridged titles but will evaluate abridged titles on a case-by-case basis. Only OAB format items are being purchased at this time.

Suggestions are welcome. Individual libraries should first check Content Reserve to see if the suggested title is in the catalog.  If it is, they should send the title information to me at tina.doody@plfdpl.info and I will forward the information to that month’s selector.

We currently have 2 open spots on the Collection Development Committee. If anyone else is interested they should let me know.

 COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENTS

·         Split for budget is 25/75 for big purchase/monthly purchase. (changed from 50/50)

·         Maintain 6:1 ratio of holds on titles as much as possible.  The wait is about 2 months if on-hold.

·         Two orders per month will be submitted. A mid-month order to purchase on-reserve titles when necessary, and an end-of-month order for holds and new titles. The selector for the month from the Collection Development Committee (CDC) will compile both lists.

·         Maintain standard to own no more than 6 copies of a title. The maximum can be overridden at the discretion of the CDC as conditions require.

·         Send suggestions from your library customers and staff proactively to Tina Doody (tina.doody@plfdpl.info) for distribution to selector for that month. Selectors will let members know whether or not a title can be added.

·         Continue checking the backlist because older titles are often added. This could complete a series or author’s full list.

·         Maintain timeframe to submit orders the end of the each month. Tina submits order after review.

·         Can change 10% of the 100 Blackstone titles – this is 10 a year. If changed people need to know so they can remove MARC records. Collection Development Committee will look at those titles not circ-ing and decide to remove and let people know.  Everything had circ-ed at least once last year when Tina had checked.

·         Consensus NOT to add new formats (ebooks/videos/music) to collection in 2009.

PROPOSED COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

Please see the proposed ListenNJ Collection Development Policy document that is linked below. I would like to make our policy and procedures a little more cohesive and put them in a format where everything is in one place. This will be up for discussion at the May 12th Group Meeting and/or you can contact me with concerns directly at tina.doody@plfdpl.info.
