CATALOGING ISSUES - MARC Records 

 
Not all participating libraries export the MARC records to their online catalogs. This is optional. They are purchased and the purchase goes right away with Overdrive but has to come from OCLC so sometimes a delay. We are only a little bit behind in current MARC records according to our Overdrive project manager. Those using MARC records agree and stress that it increases their circ and they like having them.

·         Most are not using MARC records – question of which systems the records are compatible came up – person (Linden) to e-mail Cheryl (coconnor@infolink.org) with specifics and Cheryl to find out.

 

·         It can be time-consuming to add and some libraries do not have the staff/ability to add them. Some add little-by-little so sometimes some records are there but not all.

 

·         How/where/when to get the records was asked? We need an info sheet on this. An alert comes and Cheryl shares it when they are available in the Group wiki.

 

·         Request was made for the sharing of some quotes from those using the MARC records and the efficacy and benefits of using them, i.e., Has increased circ! Etc

 

·         Sign up here to be listed as resources from Technical Services in libraries who are using the MARC records for those libraries who want to use but who might need help:

[ Instructions – Updated with New FTP Site Info, Oct. 26, 2009 ]

 

Due to space constraints, the FTP account for ListenNJ has been moved to a new server.

The new FTP server supports secure FTP. 

 

NEW Address: ftp2.oclc.org (You cannot access this FTP server by clicking on this link)

NEW Username: mcs

NEW Password: %tgZngWx

cd cpp (folder name)

cd inlcp (sub-folder name)

All FTP commands are case sensitive.

Use binary transfer mode.

  

You cannot use your browser for FTP to this new site. Instead...

Right click on the Start button and choose Explore

In the Address box, type:

ftp://mcs@ftp2.oclc.org/cpp/inlcp

A dialogue box will open prompting you for the password.

Type in the password where prompted. Be sure to follow case: %tgZngWx

Note you will have the opportunity to save the password. Tick that box and you won't have to supply the password again.

Once you have typed the needed information, click OK. You will now see an Explorer view with the FTP site on the right side. The local folders on your PC will be on the left.

You can drag and drop the files from the server to any local folder.

While connected, add the address to your favorites.

An abbreviated version of the link will be saved. It will look like this:

ftp://ftp2@oclc.org/cpp/inlcp

This link will not work.

To correct this, click on Favorites in Explorer's tool bar.

Right click on the link for the FTP site and choose properties.

Edit the URL to display the proper link:

ftp://mcs@ftp2.oclc.org/cpp/inlcp

  

In the future, if you want to log in to the FTP site...

Right click on Start->Choose Explore->Select the FTP site from your Favorites
